ACT: a practical preparation guide

Prepare for the enhanced ACT with focused English, math, and reading practice. Match your pacing and any optional-section preparation to the test you will take.

ACT · Official exam information ↗

The ACT’s current format differs from older practice books. Select resources matching your administration and confirm which optional sections are included. A useful preparation plan develops accurate reading and problem solving while giving you a pacing routine that works across unfamiliar questions.

What to understand first

The enhanced ACT’s core sections are English, mathematics, and reading. Science and writing are optional in national testing, while school arrangements can determine science participation. English asks you to edit passages; mathematics combines concepts with problem solving; reading requires close interpretation. Science emphasizes experiments, graphs, and competing explanations. If included, practice extracting relationships from data instead of treating the section as memorized science trivia. Verify which sections your intended institution expects before making a registration choice.

Build your practice plan

Start with a current official sample and review each section separately. Make an English checklist covering sentence structure, punctuation, organization, and relevance. Choose two weak mathematics topics weekly and solve direct and word-problem versions. In reading, summarize paragraph purpose before answering details. Practice science with unfamiliar charts when relevant. Once accuracy stabilizes, complete timed sections and record where time disappears. Try one pacing adjustment at a time so its effect is visible. Review correct guesses alongside errors: a lucky answer can conceal a weak method. Revisit a repaired skill after several days before deciding it is secure.

Mistakes to watch for

Legacy tests may teach content while misrepresenting current pacing. Do not mix their timing or composite-score assumptions with the enhanced format. The shortest English answer is not automatically correct. A reading answer needs textual support rather than general truth. For optional writing, develop a position and examine the supplied perspectives instead of relying on a memorized introduction.

Check the current requirements

Before booking ACT, open the official sources below and confirm the blueprint for your test date, accepted identification, available accommodations, fees, scheduling rules, and score reporting. Requirements can vary by location, institution, or licensing authority. Choose practice materials that match the current version. The study schedule here is a starting point to adapt after a diagnostic, not a promised preparation time or outcome.

Put it into practice

Diagnose two ACT passage errors

  1. Complete one current official English passage and one reading passage.
  2. Classify errors as rule, evidence, or pacing problems.
  3. Change one recurring habit and try a fresh passage to evaluate it.
