Using Worked Examples Without Copying

A worked example makes expert choices visible.

A worked example makes expert choices visible. For a beginner, it reduces the number of decisions to figure out at once while providing a model to investigate.

Understand the idea

Identify the goal, given information, and main stages before copying anything. Read the solution in chunks and predict the next meaningful move. Explain why that move serves the goal. A perfectly copied page can conceal uncertainty, while a prediction makes a missing rule or misunderstood relationship visible enough to address.

Put it into practice

For a spreadsheet lookup, inspect how the example selects the lookup value, search range, and return column. Change the employee name and predict the result. Next change the table layout and decide which references must change. Finally create a small lookup from a blank sheet. These variations reveal whether you understand the structure or simply remember which cell happened to contain the original formula.

Check and adapt

Consult the example when you can name the information you need. Restarting from its first line every time can hide one missing prerequisite. As your competence grows, reduce support and include unfamiliar cases. Extensive examples of a procedure you already perform fluently may offer less than independent application.

Put it into practice

Try it in your next study session

  1. Choose a small piece of current work and label an example's goal, inputs, and three decisions.
  2. Predict one changed version, then attempt a new task with the example hidden and record precisely where support remains necessary.
  3. Use a blank starting file for the final lookup task, including a table layout different from the demonstration. Check the returned value and explain the chosen references. If you need the example, record exactly what it supplied so the next attempt can target that missing decision.
Take this with youStudy a model's structure, vary its details, and then produce a solution without the model in view.
