TOEFL iBT: a practical preparation guide

Prepare for the current TOEFL iBT task set with integrated English practice. Work on listening accuracy, clear spoken responses, sentence construction, and purposeful writing.

ETS · Official exam information ↗

TOEFL iBT assesses English for academic use and is accepted by participating institutions. The test changed in January 2026, so an older preparation book may no longer represent current tasks. Check your institution’s requirements and use current ETS samples before deciding what to practice.

What to understand first

Reading and Listening now use an adaptive design. Current tasks include reading everyday and academic texts, completing words, understanding conversations and academic talks, building sentences, writing emails and academic discussions, and speaking through repetition and interview responses. The current score scale also differs from older materials. Verify the reporting guidance directly with ETS and the receiving institution rather than applying an old score target automatically.

Build your practice plan

Start with a current official sample in all four skills. For reading, identify meaning and relationships rather than translating every word. In listening, take brief notes on purpose, sequence, and important details, then reconstruct the message. For sentence building and writing, practice accurate syntax while keeping the response relevant to the communicative task. Record short spoken responses and review clarity, completion, and intelligibility. Repetition tasks need careful listening as well as pronunciation. Alternate test familiarization with daily reading, listening, speaking, and writing outside the test. Use official feedback where available and ask a teacher to identify repeated errors that you cannot hear or notice yourself.

Mistakes to watch for

Do not spend most of your time on retired tasks simply because a familiar course includes them. Speaking faster is not the same as speaking clearly. Memorized responses may fail to address the prompt. A practice estimate is not an institution’s admission decision. For home testing, rehearse the current equipment and room requirements rather than assuming any ordinary video-call setup is sufficient.

Check the current requirements

Before booking TOEFL iBT, open the official sources below and confirm the blueprint for your test date, accepted identification, available accommodations, fees, scheduling rules, and score reporting. Requirements can vary by location, institution, or licensing authority. Choose practice materials that match the current version. The study schedule here is a starting point to adapt after a diagnostic, not a promised preparation time or outcome.

Put it into practice

Review a current TOEFL spoken response

  1. Try one current ETS listening and speaking sample.
  2. Record the response and check meaning, completeness, and pronunciation.
  3. Choose one recurring language issue and practice it in five new sentences.
